Brighton awansowało do Premier League

Brighton & Hove Albion na trzy kolejki przed końcem sezonu zapewniło sobie awans do Premier League. „Mewy” wracają do elity po 34 latach nieobecności.

Brighton zapewniło sobie awans dzięki pokonaniu w 43. kolejce Championship Wigan Athletic oraz remisowi Huddersfield z Derby County. Na trzy kolejki przed końcem sezonu „Mewy” mają 92 punkty, o 13 więcej niż trzecie Reading oraz o 14 więcej niż Huddersfield, które ma do rozegrania jeszcze jedno zaległe spotkanie. Do Premier League awansują dwie czołowe drużyny, a cztery kolejne zagrają w barażach.

Brighton & Hove po raz ostatni w angielskiej ekstraklasie grało w sezonie 1982-1983. Zespół spadł nawet do niższych lig, ale blisko awansu do Premier League był już w ubiegłym sezonie. Wówczas w ostatniej kolejce „Mewy” zremisowały z Middlesbrough i to „Boro” dzięki lepszej różnicy goli zajęło drugie miejsce w tabeli. Brighton przepadło potem w barażach.

W tym sezonie najlepszym strzelcem drużyny jest Glenn Murray, który zdobył już 21 bramek. 15 goli strzelił z kolei Anthony Knockaert, który przed trzema laty awansował do Premier League z Leicester City. W składzie przyszłorocznego beniaminka są także m.in. David Stockdale, Shane Duffy, Baram Kayal czy Steve Sidwell. Zespół prowadzi Chris Hughton, były reprezentant Irlandii i menedżer Newcastle, Norwich i Birmingham.
